Search Me, O God!
Search me, O God! ++++++++++++++++ Search me, O God, and know my heart: Try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24 KJV The entire Psalm is worth reading for a good context; and so I encourage you to pause and read it all before you continue with this devotional. David has been enumerating the amazing intimate knowledge the LORD has about his life and ours. Yet, he asks again "Search me, God and know my heart: Try me, and know my thoughts:". The LORD truly knows us to our core and knows precisely how to lead us into eternal life. This should be a source of confidence and trust in Him. It should not be an excuse to walk carelessly and permit any "wicked way" to be found in us. Knowing that He reads our thoughts and knows the inclinations of our hearts should allow us to openly confess our weaknesses to Him and ask for the grace to overcome them. David understands that the LORD is with him where ever. He knows that the LORD actively protects him 24/7 so he is emboldened to declare: (Psalms 139:11) If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. In the LORD "darkness and the light are both alike..". Whatever life throws at him, He knows that the LORD knows and He cares. May this realization be ours too. May this truth make us courageous and motivate us to follow after Him fearlessly. David knows that "surely thou wilt slay the wicked O God:" and so he understands that he must not be aligned with "bloody men". He must hate them with "perfect hatred". We must hate evil with every fiber of our being and resist the evil nature of our flesh; "any wicked way" in us. This morning let us pray this amazing prayer of David knowing that the LORD is able to lead us "in the way everlasting". (Psalms 51:10) Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. (Psalms 51:11) Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. (Psalms 51:12) Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
