The House Of Prayer
The House Of Prayer +++++++++++++++++ And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves. Mark 11:17 KJV Jesus' first act as King, after His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, was to cleanse the Temple. The Gospel recalls: (Mark 11:15) And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves; The outer court which was meant for gentiles to also offer their prayers had doubled up into a market. Pilgrims arriving encountered money changers and merchants who sold animals—doves or cattle—for temple sacrifices; it was convenient for travelers. On the face of it, this was an important service, but in the practice, these people had become extortionists stealing from the pilgrims to God's House. Jesus graciously taught and reminded them of the purpose of the temple. It was a "house of prayer". We may draw a couple of lessons from this event this morning. First off; Jesus as KING has authority over the temple. He calls it "My House". Our body is His temple and He has the authority to cleanse us of any abuse of His temple. He reminds us that we come into this body to offer our prayers. (Luke 18:1b) men ought always to pray, and not to faint; He teaches us that our personal interests must NEVER override His purpose for us. God wants us to be prayerful above all else. Secondly, whiles there may be legitimacy in our activities, our motives can be a drawback. (1 Corinthians 13:3b) though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Let's re-examine our roles. What is our motive as we offer service in the house of God? Are we enriching ourselves at the expense of those to whom we must minister? In this Holy week, let us renew our commitment to prayer. Let us also place God's interests above all others. Let's make Him no.1 in our lives.
